Science Olympiad (SO) is nationwide competition. Students compete in 23 events that include earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Science Olympiad is designed to increase a student’s interest in STEM fields and provide recognition for outstanding achievement in team events. Students compete in Science Olympiad with the top teams advancing from Regional to State to National levels.
In 2018, 200 teams comprised of over 2500 students from 63 public, private, and parochial schools competed in the annual San Diego Regional Science Olympiad Tournament. In addition to our impact due to the sheer number of participating students, San Diego Science Olympiad is unique in other ways, including a large number of participating school programs run by parent volunteers and participating schools able to enter up to 6 teams in the regional competition.

In the past few years, Division B has over 110 teams while Division C has around 77 teams, this often presents some challenges and safety issues due to the high number of teams in Division B. Starting in 2020 season, San Diego Regional will hold Divisions B and C on 2 days. For example, 60 B teams and 40 C teams will compete in one day at one site and the remaining teams (B and C) will compete in another day. For 2020, schools will be assigned to the specific site upon receiving payment of the first team. Number of teams advancing to State and event and school awards will be based on tournament site per division.

The Regionals are leaning toward not running Game On B and replacing it with another event, possibly Codebusters. State will announce the replacement event no later than September 3rd.
