Science Olympiad (SO)is nationwide competition, designed to increase a student’s interest in STEM fields and provide recognition for outstanding achievement in team events. Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of up to 23 team events in each division (Division B is middle school; Division C is high school). Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. The top teams advance from Regional to State to National levels.
SO is team-based and teams are formed at the school level. If you are new to Science Olympiad and interested in forming a team, please read about team formation and roam the Virginia Science Olympiad website for further information.
For safety due to the corona virus (COVID-19), Virginia Science Olympiad (VASO) will be using the mini-SO model for its 2021 Regionals. In the mini-SO model, all Science Olympiad tournament activities may happen virtually at home. Written tests will be administered through this Scilympiad system to enable social distancing and some events will be administered through video interaction.
