Science Olympiad

The Texas Science Olympiad (TSO) tournament is a rigorous academic interscholastic competition that consists of a series of individual and team events which students (grades 6-12) prepare for during the year. The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows, and athletic games. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science and engineering disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers, and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of facts, concepts, processes, skills, and science applications.

The Texas Science Olympiad will be a Mini-Competition in 2021 with 18 events being offered.  This will be a virtual competition with the team members competing from the safety of their homes or other safe locations.

Each team (see rules for team configuration) must register online to compete in a virtual regional competition and pay $175 team registration fee. This $175 PER TEAM fee will pay for:

  • entry of ONE 15 member team into ONE regional competition
  • Regional, State, and National affiliation fees for ONE team

Regional competition is required of all schools advancing to Texas Science Olympiad.  The schools that qualify to compete at Nationals one year will automatically advance to the Texas Science Olympiad the following year.  They will compete at a regional tournament as usual, but the TSO slots allocated to that regional will be given to the highest-ranking schools that did not qualify for the National Science Olympiad the previous year.  Upon the completion of all regional competitions and notification of state qualifiers, teams participating in the TSO will be entered in a random lottery for team numbers.

Regional competitions are limited to TWO teams per school. Additional teams may be requested after the close of registration if space is available and upon Regional and State Director approval.

Many Invitational competitions allow more than TWO teams per school to participate at their competition.  This is at the discretion of the Invitational Director – check with them to see how many teams are allowed from each school. If a school wishes to have more than TWO teams compete at an invitational, they MUST register the additional teams and pay the discounted membership fee of $85 per additional team.  This fee covers the necessary National, State and Invitational affiliation fees and one manual in their division.  Each Invitational will have their own required entry fee for their competition – this fee is not included in the $85 affiliation fee.
